It’s more difficult to find modern Russian thimbles than antiquarian ones, though they are made by our most famous firms. Among such firms we should name the best in Russia St.Petersburg’s "Lomonosov porcelain factory" (LFZ), "Severnaia Chern" works in Veliky Ustiug, "Rostov finift" factory in Rostov. The most popular
among foreign collectors is Russian thimble doll Matrioshka. Thimbles made as wooden matrioshka are articles of folk home craft. Besides there are a lot of thimbles made of papie-mache in style of Fedoskinskya, Palehskya, Mstiorskya and Holuiskya miniature. There are thimbles made of ceramics such as Gzhel and thimbles made of bone in Arhangelsky region (Holmogorskya carving). Nowadays we can find different thimbles made as souvenirs if we take into account foreign tourists. They are not of great art value, but as the English writer Jerome K. Jerome wrote, the ugly porcelain dog, standing on your bureau, would probably be the most valuable exhibit of some museum two hundred years later. Our thimbles made as souvenirs will probably be sold at Christie's auction two hundred years after, you never can tell. But it’s not easy to buy all this beauty: there is no particularized shops "Thimbles" in Russia, there is no such departments even in big department stores. It’s difficult to meet thimbles among souvenirs either.
Let’s briefly attract our attention to some types of modern Russian thimbles.
